Principal Facilities Engineer

Archaea Energy, a bp company, is a leader in landfill gas to energy and the largest renewable natural gas (RNG) producer in the U.S. The team operates around 50 sites in 32 states with a robust development pipeline, specializing in the development, construction, and operation of RNG, landfill-gas-to-electric, and dairy digester facilities.
About the Role
The Principal Facilities Engineer serves as the primary technical contact supporting the safe and efficient operation of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) plants in an assigned region—typically three to five facilities. This role partners closely with other engineering disciplines, including Electrical and Controls, and provides engineering review and feedback on new plants under development. This is an office-based position with up to 25% domestic travel.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary technical resource for operators and technicians across multiple operating RNG plants.
- Act as a process safety leader for assigned sites, including participation in Process Hazard Analyses (PHAs) and use of the Management of Change (MOC) process.
- Optimize plant availability, methane recovery, and sales gas delivery.
- Troubleshoot process upsets and equipment issues affecting plant performance.
- Lead Root Cause Analyses of events resulting in unplanned downtime.
- Scope, design, and implement minor plant modifications through the MOC process.
- Participate in design reviews for new plants in development.
- Review major engineering submittals produced by third-party engineering contractors.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Chemical Engineering or equivalent in a related field.
- More than 5 years of experience with natural gas processing, refining, petrochemicals, or a related field.
- Technical understanding of the design and operation of gas processing equipment.
- Proficiency in working with Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
Qualifications
- Professional Engineering (PE) license (desirable).
- Experience with RNG facilities (desirable).
- Hands-on experience with gas compression, pressure swing adsorption, membrane separation, flares and thermal oxidizers, process control, and instrumentation (desirable).
- Process simulation experience (e.g., Aspen HYSYS, ProMax) (desirable).
- Working knowledge of relief system sizing, pipe hydraulics, control valve sizing and selection, and heat transfer calculations (desirable).

Pay
$110,000 - $145,000 base compensation.

This is a hybrid office/remote position with up to 25% domestic travel.
