Principal Engineering Technician (NY HELPS) - (Region 8)
About the Role
As a Principal Engineering Technician, you will perform complex and technical activities in support of various engineering projects and/or program areas.
Responsibilities
- Prepare written reports and cost estimates of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Prepare plans and/or details utilizing CADD software.
- Develop or review contract plans and specifications.
- Assist on a survey crew.
- Supervise lower-level technicians in areas such as design, construction inspection, surveying, traffic engineering, maintenance, planning, engineering research, and material testing.
- Plan and schedule field and laboratory test work, review test reports, and develop testing equipment and procedures.
- Use various computer applications in the performance of duties.
Specific program assignments and duties will be discussed at the time of your interview.
Qualifications
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications for this position.
Promotional:
- One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).
Open Competitive:
- Four years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting, or surveying, and graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority.
- An associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology and two years of experience listed in the first bullet.
- A bachelor's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.
Candidates may also qualify for permanent competitive appointment if reachable from the appropriate Civil Service eligible list or eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law. If there are three or fewer qualified candidates interested in appointment to this position, a permanent appointment may be made pursuant to Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. To be eligible, candidates must be an employee of the Department of Transportation and have one year of permanent competitive service as a Senior Engineering Technician, SG-13.
Additional Information
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, meaning no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title. At a future date, employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status without examination, affording them the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in an NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Your required educational credentials must have been awarded by an educational institution accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education/Secretary of Education. If awarded by an institution outside of the U.S. and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency.
Pay
The salary range listed reflects the full range for this graded position. For new State employees appointed into graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations, and negotiated union contracts.
