About the Role
We are seeking a Principal Engineer for Substation projects. This role is responsible for performing engineering assignments from limited scope to advanced projects requiring expertise across multiple disciplines. The position involves project management, negotiations, and performance tracking, with a focus on utility-scale solar, BESS, and power plant operations. The successful candidate will work with increasing independence, provide technical oversight, and ensure project success from conception through execution.
Responsibilities
- Oversee all assigned substation projects from conception through construction and commissioning.
- Provide training, due diligence, and technical oversight for external engineers to ensure compliance with industry codes, standards, and project specifications.
- Secure engineering consulting resources by developing scopes of work, securing bids, and awarding work through the supply chain group.
- Coordinate with stakeholders to develop and secure substation sites, supporting necessary engineering updates and permits.
- Source, select, and contract geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services.
- Represent internal and external interests on assigned projects, including presenting progress, issues, and risk mitigation to management.
- Support the review of interconnection documentation and ensure project designs comply with all ISO and transmission owner requirements.
- Manage orders for long-lead major materials to minimize project delays and budget overruns.
- Collaborate with project engineering resources across various disciplines to define priorities and work plans.
- Ensure projects are implemented efficiently, cost-effectively, and safely in accordance with established processes and policies.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering is required; a degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering is preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in the design and engineering of High Voltage substation projects.
- 15+ years of experience planning, designing, and executing large-scale energy projects, including solar, BESS, wind, and hydrogen systems, is highly relevant.
- Project engineering and/or project management experience is necessary.
Skills
- Knowledge of computational tools such as ETAP or EDISON.
- Familiarity with standards including IEEE, NESC, and ASCE.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineering (PE) certification or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
- Advanced experience in system integration and risk management.
