Principal Engineer - Software Engineering (Onsite)

About the Role

Collins Aerospace is seeking a Principal Software Engineer for the Military Avionics Flight Management Applications department in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This role focuses on the technical aspects of product development related to architectures, design, and development processes for fixed and rotary wing platforms. Teams are cross-functional, working in an AGILE environment (6-10 people) on software-only products. The position involves leading technical decisions, maintaining product quality, and supporting the full product lifecycle from bid and proposal to certification and support.

This position may require extended working hours beyond a typical 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM workday or a 40-hour work week.

Product Summary

CAAS/Flight 2 Flight Management Solutions are signature products for Military Avionics and Helicopters, part of Collins Integrated Avionics Systems. These products are fielded on thousands of aircraft and include capabilities such as:

• Flight Management Systems (FMS)
• Performance Application
• System Manager
• Flight Plan Server (FPS)

Responsibilities

• Develop software for fixed and rotary wing platforms as part of the Flight Management Applications team.
• Mentor and guide team members in software development best practices and solving technical challenges.
• Implement and verify updates to flight management software and graphical flight planning/display software.
• Communicate plans and status on assigned tasks to agile team members, stakeholders, and customers.
• Coordinate with platform engineering and other software domain teams to track dependencies for shared features.
• Champion knowledge sharing through formal training and informal mentoring.
• Travel domestically and internationally as needed.

Requirements

Qualifications You Must Have:

• A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or an Advanced Degree in a related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
• Experience in the design and development of deliverable software (production or consumer-facing).

Qualifications We Prefer:

• Defense or Aerospace industry experience.
• DO-178 or similar certification-based development experience.
• Avionics knowledge.
• AGILE development experience.
• Experience with Ada or C/C++ coding.
• Python scripting experience.
• Demonstrated time management skills, including the ability to work unsupervised, multitask, and coordinate work.
• Ability to manage the relationship between cost and value.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $107,500 USD - $204,500 USD. The range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. Factors considered include role, function, responsibilities, work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs, depending on the level of the position and whether it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments are not guaranteed and depend on individual, business unit, and company performance.
