About the role

This role is part of Alcon's Engineering function, focused on improving quality, processes, products, packaging, and materials across our business to help deliver brilliant outcomes. As Principal I, Mechanical Design Engineering, you will design, analyze, and optimize complex mechanical components and systems. You will build effective relationships with cross-functional teams and apply advanced engineering principles to solve problems. This is an on-site position in Fort Worth, Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Support device engineering activities for ocular health-related new products, including novel ophthalmic devices (packaging/delivery devices).
  • Participate in or support product development activities such as design development, prototyping/testing, pilot builds, verification & validation testing, risk assessment, and production tooling validation.
  • Apply statistical principles to communicate meaningful conclusions relevant to customer needs.
  • Apply knowledge of materials and manufacturing methods for medical devices.
  • Generate detailed fabrication drawings utilizing GD&T and tolerance analysis, appropriate product requirements, technical file documents, and lead design reviews.
  • Apply principles of engineering analysis to blend technical knowledge and manufacturing practices in providing solutions to complex engineering challenges.
  • Develop requirements, lead design reviews, perform verification and validation, production transfer, and related documentation.
  • Generate internal reports for communication with cross-functional members and management.
  • Support all aspects of documentation, including Verification Plans and Reports, and design control through ECN and Windchill.
  • Support existing devices and ophthalmic packaging by addressing product support requests and questions on existing products.
  • Ensure regulatory, statutory, and legislative compliance for all project work.
  • Work efficiently and productively with other team members and external partners under minimum oversight to identify and prioritize work activities to achieve project goals within set timelines.
  • Adhere to Alcon's guidelines for appropriate workplace behaviors and attitudes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs).
  • Ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English.
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of SolidWorks/PTC Creo and related detailed drawings.
  • Working knowledge and experience with mechanical systems and assemblies.
  • Ability to perform root cause analysis investigations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in medical devices.
  • Proficiency in CAD (SolidWorks or Creo preferred).
  • Working knowledge with FEA analysis.
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis and software.
  • Experience with evaluation of mechanical systems and assemblies.
  • Working knowledge and experience with fluidic systems.
  • Working knowledge and experience with electronics and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of ISO, FDA, MDD, and regulations applicable to the design and development of medical devices.
  • Excellent technical writing capability in generating technical documentation and scientific papers.
