About the role
As a Principal Engineer at Liberty Mutual, you’ll consult on highly complex projects and solve technical problems while working in an agile environment that has the creative energy of a start-up and the full backing and comprehensive benefits of a Fortune 100 company. This U.S.-based role is hybrid, requiring 2 days in the office per week in one of our tech hubs: Plano, TX; Boston, MA; Portsmouth, NH; Indianapolis, IN; or Columbus, OH. Visa sponsorship is not available, and candidates in the OPT program will not be considered.
The Portfolio Principal Engineer (PPE) role within the DAE BDSE Digital, Customer and Service data delivery portfolio is the technical leader who collaborates with domain stakeholders, engineering teams, and leadership to ensure teams have the support and expertise needed to deliver maximum business value. Functionally, the PPE reports to the Portfolio Engineering Director and coordinates with TTT for cross-portfolio solutioning. This role operates within an autonomous Kanban model and is ideal for a strong Principal Engineer eager to step out of their comfort zone, tackle new technical and process challenges, and enhance their leadership in a high-demand SDLC environment.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and develop complex data solutions and act as a technical expert for data initiatives across the portfolio.
- Build and design complex data models and architectures that improve accessibility, efficiency, governance, and quality of data.
- Collaborate with TTT on long-term architectural (LTA) patterns for existing and new designs.
- Actively participate in portfolio agile ceremonies (PI Planning, Sprint Planning, Backlog grooming, Sprint Reviews) and guide product teams.
- Proactively identify opportunities to enhance data pipelines, processes, and cost efficiency, and drive those improvements forward.
- Lead and direct team members, mentor data engineers across the portfolio, and upskill talent.
- Ensure portfolio teams consistently follow established best practices and standards, identify process gaps, and document streamlined workflows.
- Collaborate with and support the Solutions Engineer in design, backlog refinement, capability development, technology roadmaps, implementation, cutover plans, post-implementation support, issue resolution, transition planning, and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to and action items from forums such as BDSE Dev User, DV, Testing Guild, Tech Roundtables, and Leadership to improve engineering user experience.
- Support application and web analytics collection platforms to track and analyze user interactions on Liberty’s customer and agent-facing websites and applications, optimizing digital performance.
- Ensure consistent tagging approaches for reporting, validate tagging and usability in Adobe Analytics UI and raw clickstream data during feature releases, and perform regression testing.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define tagging requirements for digital properties (websites, mobile apps, and other platforms).
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 8+ years of experience delivering solutions in large, distributed technical ecosystems using agile practices (Scrum, Kanban, or XP).
- Experience with microservices and cloud platforms (AWS).
- Proficiency with Java, Spring Boot, REST, Kafka, Kubernetes, microservices, testing frameworks, DevOps tools, and CI/CD pipelines (Bamboo/GitHub Actions/Jenkins).
- Full-stack development and software engineering expertise, particularly in back-end application/platform engineering within digital and data spaces.
- Experience with Tealium Tag Management, Tealium CDP, Adobe Analytics, Snowflake, or similar industry tools (e.g., Ensighten, Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Content Square, HEAP).
- Experience with client- and server-side data collection.
- Solid foundation in JavaScript and back/front-end development.
- Experience with backend services (AWS [SQS, SNS, S3, CDK, Lambda], RESTful APIs, PCF, Kafka) and tools like Tealium Tag Management System, Adobe Analytics variable mapping, Heap Analytics, and Galileo.js (autocapture)/Galileo API.

- Designing and developing complex programs/tools for data ingestion, curation, and provisioning to support analytics, reporting, and data science.
- Designing and building data provisioning workflows/pipelines, physical data schemas, extracts, transformations, and integrations.
- Designing and building data architectures and applications that improve reporting, analytics, data science, and data management.

Pay
The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. The full salary range reflects the competitive labor market value for similar positions across the national market and provides opportunities for progression as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles may include commission and/or bonus earnings based on factors outlined in the compensation plan.
