Principal Engineer
About the role
The Chesterfield County Department of Utilities is a public water and wastewater utility committed to delivering high-quality service and protecting the environment. This position serves as a manager within the Development Section, overseeing utility engineering for community development projects.
Responsibilities
- Manage a team of senior engineers and assistants in plan review, permit review, cross-connection control, and backflow prevention.
- Support capital project management, facilities master planning, and system modeling for community development.
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to water distribution and wastewater collection systems using engineering analysis and standard practices.
- Prepare and review monthly reports, drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and contracts.
- Interact with the public and collaborate with various agencies and internal teams on project design and construction.
- Host or attend meetings and presentations with diverse groups of internal and external customers.
- Serve as a representative for the county in project teams, addressing utilities system impacts from land development proposals.
- Provide training, guidance, and supervision to ensure departmental goals and expectations for project completion are met.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Five years of engineering experience in water or wastewater systems, or a combination thereof.
- A Professional Engineer (PE) designation with experience in water modeling, project management, and supervisory roles.
Qualifications
- Strong technical aptitude and excellent technical writing and oral communication skills.
- Proficient knowledge of water and wastewater systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to develop positive working relationships and work effectively in a team environment.

Benefits
The salary range for this position is $84,488 - $128,845. Salary is determined based on qualifications and experience.
