Principal Electrical Power System Engineer
Position Summary
Axiom Space is seeking a bold and dynamic Electrical Power System Engineer Principal to own assigned segments of the Axiom Space Station power architecture end‑to‑end, from requirements through analysis, supplier engagement, testing, and verification. The role involves deep engagement with power electronics, development of verifiable requirements, modeling, interface control, and leadership of technical reviews with NASA and international partners.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Own assigned segments of the Electrical Power System requirement baseline; author verifiable requirements, maintain traceability, and close TBD/TBC/TBR items.
- Model the system and produce analyses for power and energy budgets, load flow, voltage drop, transient response, bus stability, fault current, protection coordination, inrush and capacitive load management, harness sizing, and efficiency/dissipation roll‑ups.
- Evaluate power conversion approaches and their system‑level consequences, including control behavior, current sharing, efficiency, mass, thermal, and electromagnetic signature; review and challenge supplier designs.
- Author and maintain power quality specifications for both sides of the interface: steady‑state voltage limits, ripple and noise, transient envelopes, stability criteria, and limits imposed on power‑consuming equipment.
- Author and maintain interface control documents at module‑to‑module, visiting vehicle, payload, and equipment levels; drive interface agreement with internal subsystems, international partners, and external customers.
- Contribute to grounding, bonding, isolation, and ground‑fault detection architecture; coordinate with the EMC control program on control‑plan compliance, test tailoring, and non‑compliance disposition.
- Lead supplier technical engagement: develop procurement specifications and statements of work, create RFP technical content, perform rough order of magnitude and proposal evaluation, conduct technical exchange meetings, review supplier data packages, manage deviations/waivers, and negotiate technical scope and interface responsibility.
- Plan and support verification activities: verification matrices, test requirements and procedures, laboratory and engineering model test campaigns, power quality and stability measurement, fault insertion, and data reduction against acceptance criteria.
- Prepare, present, and defend material at SRR, PDR, CDR, Test Readiness Review, and Manufacturing Readiness Review, including to NASA and international partner audiences; drive actions to closure.
- Mentor junior engineers, review their analyses and documents, and raise the technical standard of the team.
- Communicate progress, status, risk, and options to stakeholders and leadership.
- Perform additional job duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent; advanced degree preferred.
- Level 4: 8+ years in spacecraft, aerospace, or high‑reliability electrical power systems engineering.
- Level 5: 12+ years, including at least one program carried from requirements definition through Critical Design Review or later.
- Demonstrated depth in power electronics (DC‑DC conversion, control loop behavior, protection devices, failure modes).
- Proficiency in system modeling using Simulink, PLECS, PSIM, Saber, SPICE, Python, or equivalent.
- Proven ability to author engineering documentation that withstands external review (requirements, ICDs, power quality specs, analysis reports, verification plans).
- Experience with requirements management tools such as Jama, DOORS, or equivalent.
- Direct experience leading technical negotiations with suppliers, including specification development, proposal evaluation, and design review.
- Hands‑on familiarity with electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, electronic loads, programmable supplies, power analyzers).
- Track record of delivering high‑quality results under tight deadlines in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Human spaceflight or crewed vehicle experience.
- Familiarity with ISS power interface standards (SSP 30237, SSP 52051, NASA‑STD‑4003, MSFC‑STD‑3790).

Work Environment
Generally an office environment, but tasks may require inside or outside work depending on the assignment. The position may require access to export‑controlled technical data subject to NASA regulations, ITAR, or EAR, and candidates may undergo additional export control screening. Flexibility to work evenings and weekends is required to meet critical project milestones.
Requirements
- Access to export‑controlled technical data or technology subject to NASA regulations, ITAR, or EAR.
- Physical demands: primarily sitting or standing for extended periods (≈90% of the time); occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 lb (≈5% of the time).
- Standard office equipment (PC, phone, printer, etc.)
