About The Role
Reporting directly to the Director of Electrical Engineering, the Principal Engineer will lead electrical engineering design aspects of capital projects, facility upgrades, and business development/expansion projects. This role involves providing electrical design support for planned outages, equipment troubleshooting, and leading multiple electrical projects/programs across the network. The Principal Engineer will act as a subject matter expert (SME), drive technical standardization, mentor junior team members, and collaborate with cross-functional teams. This position offers high visibility and direct impact on organizational success.
Preferred location: Florham Park, NJ Headquarters. This role requires ~20% travel, including domestic and international locations (e.g., China). A remote work option is available with additional travel as needed.
Responsibilities
- Electrical Design (Core Responsibility):
- Independently develop, review, and approve electrical system design documents, including one-line/three-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, arc flash studies, short circuit and voltage drop calculations, and coordination studies.
- Develop scope of work for electrical architecture and engineering (AE) firms and coordinate with suppliers and contractors.
- Plan design tasks to ensure projects are completed within budget and schedule constraints.
- Serve as technical lead and SME for small to medium capital programs.
- Design scope includes system design, scope development, engineering calculations, specifications, and risk assessments for HV/MV systems (switchgears, transformers, motor control centers, relay/protection systems).
- Engineering Standards (Core Responsibility):
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, adapting as needed for design.
- Act as guardian of key electrical design standards/specifications as the SME for the Reworld Electrical Team.
- Update design standards and specifications periodically to align with industry best practices and regulatory developments.
- Commissioning/Startup:
- Provide SME design support to project managers on assigned construction projects.
- Offer engineering support for commissioning and installations.
- Troubleshooting/Problem Solving:
- Provide electrical engineering design troubleshooting support to plant operations.
- Analyze electrical failure root causes and develop cost-effective technical solutions for root cause analyses (RCAs).
Requirements
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 10 years of engineering experience.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain licensure is preferred.
Qualifications
- Experience with high, medium, and low voltage distribution systems and electrical power generation in large utility power plants, industrial co-generation facilities, or design/architectural engineering firms.
- Proficiency in developing and understanding one-line/three-line diagrams, DC control schematics, wiring diagrams, and GA drawings related to interconnections, substations, power plants, and electrical aspects of process plants (e.g., motors, MCCs, PDCs, and other electrical equipment).
- Experience with all phases of a project, including preliminary conceptual system design, scoping, detailed design, equipment selection, testing, and start-up problem resolution (voltage ranges from HV (>100KV) to low voltage (480V)).
- Experience with protective relaying schemes (medium voltage), including coordination and development of relay settings. SEL relays experience is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in engineering software such as CAD/AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM Powertools, SEL Acselerator, etc.
- Effective written and oral communication skills; ability to analyze data, write technical reports, and develop work packages.
- Ability to work on multiple concurrent projects with minimal supervision.
Pay
The pay range for the primary location of this position is $118,700.00 - $169,800.00 USD per annum. The final salary will be determined based on factors including experience, education, geographic location, skills, competencies, travel requirements, and/or union contracts (if applicable).
