Principal Electrical Design Engineer
Description
The Principal Electrical Design Engineer is a subject matter expert within the product development team, bringing deep technical expertise in mixed-signal electrical design. This role drives innovation by applying current best practices and emerging technologies to develop cutting-edge solutions and differentiated intellectual property. This is a high-impact, hands-on technical leadership role at the core of our product innovation. You will help define the next generation of our medical devices while strengthening the technical foundation needed to support a growing product portfolio. You will play a critical role in bridging early-stage innovation with scalable, reliable product development, directly influencing system architecture, product performance, and engineering processes as the organization grows. You thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities while independently driving complex projects from concept through production. You play a key role in defining system and hardware requirements, balancing speed with the rigor required for regulated medical devices.
Job Responsibilities
- Drive key architectural decisions that impact current and future product platforms
- Lead mixed-signal electrical design efforts across the full product lifecycle, from concept and development through launch and sustaining support
- Translate user needs, clinical insights, and product requirements into robust system-level design solutions
- Apply engineering analysis (analytical, simulation, and empirical testing) to ensure designs meet functional and reliability requirements
- Define and implement system architecture and hardware design best practices
- Evaluate and integrate new technologies (ICs, electromechanical systems, power circuits) with consideration for scalability, manufacturability, and supply chain constraints
- Architect and develop automated test systems to support product validation, manufacturing, and continuous improvement
- Lead products through regulatory compliance and testing (e.g., EMC, electrical safety), including standards such as FCC Part 15 and IEC 60601-1
- Develop and maintain design control documentation (user needs, design inputs, verification/validation, DHF artifacts)
- Mentor engineers and elevate technical standards across the team
- Collaborate cross-functionally (mechanical, firmware, software, quality, and manufacturing) to translate product vision into robust, manufacturable solutions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or related field with 7+ years of experience designing mixed-signal circuits in a regulated environment
- Proven expertise in low-noise signal acquisition and signal conditioning circuit design
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including experience guiding and mentoring engineers through the product development lifecycle
- Strong hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, including breadboarding, simulation, PCB design/layout, and proof-of-concept validation
- Ability to translate product requirements into system architecture and detailed implementation
- Working knowledge of applicable standards and regulations (e.g., IEC 60601-1 family, UL, FCC Part 15)
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment while managing multiple competing tasks and demands
- Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and ability to overcome technical challenges
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering, or related field with 5+ years of domain experience
- Experience designing medical devices and supporting regulatory testing and certification
- Expertise in battery technologies (e.g., Li-Ion Polymer) and power management design
- Experience with electromechanical and haptic systems (motors, solenoids, drive circuitry)
- Experience with hardware communication interfaces (USB, RS-232, SPI, I²C, etc.)
- Familiarity with embedded software development (Python, C, C++, Java, Kotlin)
- Experience with industry tools such as Altium, LTSpice, OrCAD, Eagle, and prototyping platforms (Raspberry Pi, Arduino)
