About the Role

Onshape, a PTC SaaS business, is redefining how professional engineers design, collaborate, and manage product data in the cloud. Our platform brings the best of modern SaaS collaboration to 3D CAD—think SolidWorks meets GitHub meets Google Docs—and is used globally by teams building the next generation of products.

We are looking for a Principal DevOps Engineer to help scale and operate the global cloud platform behind Onshape’s collaborative CAD and data management service. This is a hands-on technical leadership role for someone who enjoys solving complex infrastructure challenges, building automation, improving reliability, and keeping large-scale SaaS systems secure, performant, and resilient. You will work closely with a highly technical team in Boston’s Seaport District to create a low-touch, highly automated cloud environment.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated, deeply hands-on with Linux and cloud operations, comfortable digging into code and infrastructure, and excited to raise the bar for deployment, monitoring, security, and operational excellence across a global SaaS platform.

Why This Role Matters

  • Operate and evolve the cloud platform behind a globally used SaaS product.
  • Focus on AWS infrastructure, automation, Linux operations, Kubernetes platforms, security, compliance, and operational excellence.
  • This role is distinct from SRE and is centered on infrastructure and platform operations rather than Java application reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and improve cloud infrastructure supporting thousands of cloud resources.
  • Build low-touch, highly automated operational environments.
  • Eliminate manual operational toil through engineering.
  • Manage infrastructure as code and configuration management standards.
  • Improve deployment consistency, disaster recovery, and operational readiness.
  • Partner with security teams on hardening and compliance initiatives.
  • Create self-service capabilities that enable engineering teams to move faster.
  • Influence platform standards and operational best practices.

What You Will Own

  • Large-scale AWS cloud infrastructure operations.
  • Terraform and configuration management using Ansible/Puppet.
  • Linux fleet management and automation.
  • Kubernetes and cloud-native platform operations.
  • Operational tooling, observability implementation, and platform supportability.
  • Security, compliance, GovCloud, ITAR, and FedRAMP support.
  • Cloud scalability, capacity planning, and cost optimization.
  • Technical leadership and mentoring across engineering teams.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in Cloud Operations, Platform Engineering, Systems Engineering, or DevOps.
  • Strong AWS experience at production scale.
  • Expert Linux administration and troubleshooting.
  • Terraform expertise.
  • Ansible, Puppet, or Chef experience.
  • Kubernetes operational experience.
  • Python, Bash, or Go automation skills.
  • Production on-call and incident response experience.

Preferred Experience

  • MongoDB, Elasticsearch, or similar platforms.
  • GovCloud, FedRAMP, or ITAR environments.
  • GitOps and platform engineering experience.
  • Cloud cost optimization and FinOps.
  • Java application operational support.

Why Candidates Join

  • Principal-level technical impact without people management.
  • Large-scale SaaS challenges.
  • Strong engineering culture.
  • Opportunity to eliminate toil through automation.
  • Hybrid flexibility in Greater Boston.
