Responsibilities
- Define the project's visual direction and establish and maintain concept art quality standards.
- Lead the overall visual development of characters, environments, props, etc., and give shape to the art direction.
- Explore visual directions from the early ideation stage and establish the project's visual language.
- Collaborate with Art Directors, Design, and 3D teams to ensure concepts are realized in the final in-game output.
- Review work from team members and outsource artists and provide clear feedback.
- Build and maintain style guides and visual references.
- Quickly present alternatives when project direction shifts and reestablish the visual direction.
- Define the project's overall visual language and design and maintain the standards that align deliverables toward a cohesive direction.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience for Principal level in game development or equivalent relevant experience, with at least 1 shipped game.
- Portfolio showcasing photorealistic, high-quality character or environment concept art.
- Strong visual design capabilities across characters, environments, and other domains.
- Deep understanding of form, structure, color, and lighting.
- Able to produce work ranging from rapid ideation sketches to highly polished concept pieces.
- Understanding of the 3D production pipeline.
- Experience leading a team or mentoring artists.
- Experience communicating clearly and solving problems in a collaborative environment.
- Experience owning environment art quality and direction and meeting deliverables on a past project.
- Able to self-manage, prioritize tasks, and deliver under deadlines.
- Able to work during Pacific Time zone business hours (10am-4pm) with weekly ability to meet in the evenings (5-8pm PT) for international collaboration.
- Able to travel internationally 1-3 times a year for business purposes.
