About the role

Principal Risk Associates at Capital One are the front line of defense to ensure the Company remains stable and profitable. They work with business partners to identify and mitigate potential risks, have high exposure across lines of business, and create and implement innovative solutions to protect the Company. As a Principal Risk Associate on the International Risk Program, you will apply risk analysis and advisory skills to major company challenges in a collaborative environment that values insight, encourages new responsibility, promotes continuous learning, and rewards innovation.

The International Risk team oversees Capital One’s international business activities, including non‑US products, services, offshore associates, contractors, and facilities, to manage international risk exposure. The team also helps the business navigate new initiatives around the world and is highly visible within Capital One as international risk garners increased focus across the banking industry.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze international risk data and proactively identify country risks and trends on an ongoing basis
  • Advise multiple businesses and support functions on country risks and lead enhancements to the second‑line framework overseeing Capital One’s international risk profile
  • Collaborate with other risk teams to create an integrated international risk experience for the business
  • Assess changes in internal and/or external country exposures and conditions, identifying and reporting on relevant risks
  • Execute challenge activities to elevate areas of suspected risk and escalate as appropriate to leadership
  • Demonstrate independent and adaptive problem‑solving and analysis with high attention to detail
  • Communicate, collaborate, solve problems, and influence across various levels of the organization
  • Stay current on changing economic, social, and political environments to understand impacts to Capital One’s foreign business activities

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or military experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in risk management
  • At least 2 years of experience conducting risk oversight and effective challenge
  • At least 2 years of experience advising internal or external stakeholders on risk identification and mitigation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Economics, Econometrics, International Economics, International Affairs, Quantitative Social Sciences, or Political Analytics
  • 1+ year of experience in international economic or political risk analysis
  • 1+ year of experience in international or country risk management/advisory
  • Industry certifications in Risk Management (e.g., Certified Risk Management Professional)

Pay

  • McLean, VA: $120,800 – $137,900
  • New York, NY: $131,800 – $150,500
  • Richmond, VA: $109,900 – $125,400
  • Other locations: salary range determined by location and detailed in the candidate’s offer letter
  • Eligible for performance‑based incentive compensation (cash bonuses and/or long‑term incentives)
