Pay Grade: A (Non-Exempt Support Staff Salary Placement). Department and reporting line vary; incumbents report to the Kidspace Coordinator.

About the role

Under direct supervision, incumbents provide assistance to teachers in a classroom environment by preparing materials, working with students individually or in groups, demonstrating skills, communicating with parents, and supporting daily classroom activities.

Responsibilities

  • Work with students individually or in groups on special projects or assignments including spelling, reading, mathematics, comprehension levels, and memorization of emergency information.
  • Demonstrate skills and techniques to aid in student learning.
  • Monitor student behavior and enforce school and classroom standards and policies.
  • Copy and prepare educational materials as needed.
  • Prepare classrooms for activities, including setting up tables and chairs and handing out materials.
  • Perform clean-up after activities, including picking up toys and trash, washing tables and chairs, and rearranging furniture.
  • Accompany students from classrooms to other areas (library, playground, cafeteria, buses) to ensure orderly behavior.
  • Dispense medications to students and perform minor first aid as directed by nurse or principal.
  • Communicate with parents regarding progress and concerns, including academic improvements, truancy, and behavioral problems.
  • Interpret communications between teachers and parents when necessary.
  • Assist teachers in planning and coordinating lesson plans by sharing ideas and providing student feedback.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired or current high school student aged 17 or older.
  • Six months of experience working with children in a learning environment or related setting.
  • Valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate within thirty days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in English and a target language.

Physical Requirements

The role occasionally requires:

  • Standing, walking, sitting, and using hands to handle or feel objects.
  • Reaching with hands and arms, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Talking, hearing, and tasting or smelling.
  • Lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds.
  • Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Working Conditions

The work environment is usually moderate in noise level.
