Provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students and operates a school bus on assigned routes to transport students safely.
Responsibilities
- Assists teacher with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness.
- Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom; records time out and in-class suspension; assists with crisis prevention; restrains students as needed.
- Monitors the safety and well-being of students; encourages self-esteem and student independence.
- Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; provides one-on-one assistance as needed.
- Maintains acceptable relationships with parents/guardians of students transported and with school personnel.
- Operates the assigned school bus on the route(s) and schedule, obeying all traffic laws and school bus regulations.
- Performs required post-trip inspection to detect remaining students or irregularities/vandalism.
- Observes all safety regulations and standards for school buses, including cleaning the bus and evacuating students in emergencies.
- Maintains discipline of students on the bus, establishing a progressive plan of consequences and rewards.
- Secures the assigned bus before leaving the vehicle, including parking properly, inspecting for damage or remaining passengers, and securing windows and doors.
- Performs other related tasks as required.
Requirements
- High School diploma.
- Associates Degree in Early Childhood OR EDU 119 (Credentials) AND one additional EDU class (minimum).
- Must meet the NCLB HQ Standards (48 Semester Hours, or Associates Degree, or Workkeys Completed + 2 College Courses or 96 Contact Hours).
- Must be bilingual (English and Spanish).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs.
- Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects (Light Work).
- Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly (Medium Work).
- Requires the ability to compare and judge characteristics of data, people, or things.
- Requires the ability to speak and signal people to convey or exchange information.
- Requires the ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, forms, and instructional materials.
- Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems with limited standardization.
- Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow instructions.
- Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas, add, subtract, and work with decimals and percentages.
- Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
- Requires coordination of hands and eyes rapidly and accurately.
- Requires minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination and manual dexterity.
- Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades, including traffic signals.
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions, adaptable under stress.
- Requires the ability to talk and hear, including communicating via telephone.
Skills
- General knowledge of classroom activities and daily routines.
- General knowledge of student handbook rules and emergency procedures.
- General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration.
- Some knowledge of the curriculum for the grade.

Schedule
Full-time for ten months.
