About the Role
The Preconstruction Scheduler supports the planning, development, and maintenance of construction schedules for heavy civil infrastructure projects. Working closely with the Preconstruction, Estimating, Project Management, and Field Operations teams, this position assists in developing realistic project schedules based on construction sequencing, production rates, equipment utilization, and project requirements. The role requires practical knowledge of heavy civil construction operations — including earthwork, excavation, grading, concrete structures, and site development — along with working experience using Primavera P6. Well suited for individuals with field engineering, project engineering, or construction operations experience who want to apply their field knowledge while developing expertise in preconstruction planning and scheduling.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with pre-construction team to prepare schedules for bids prior to bid due dates
- Support preliminary schedules for heavy civil bids and proposed projects in collaboration with estimating and operations
- Review drawings, specifications, quantities, and project approaches to identify activities, milestones, construction sequences, and scheduling constraints
- Use field understanding of earthwork, grading, excavation, concrete structures, utilities, equipment, crews, and production rates to help establish realistic durations
- Develop, maintain, and update project schedules in Primavera P6 with guidance as appropriate
- Assist with baseline schedules, activity logic, progress updates, look-ahead schedules, and schedule reports
- Compare planned and actual progress and help identify critical activities, delays, constraints, and potential schedule impacts
- Participate in planning discussions with project managers, superintendents, field engineers, and subcontractors to develop two-week look-ahead schedules and discuss progress, upcoming deadlines, and planned work
- Support resource or cost loading, recovery scheduling, and more advanced analyses as skills develop and projects require
- Develop and/or support the creation of time impact analyses and fragnets to support change orders, requests for equitable adjustments, and claims
- Communicate schedule progress, potential conflicts, and upcoming milestones to preconstruction and project teams
- Maintain accurate scheduling files, assumptions, updates, and planning documentation
- Participate in project site visits and help improve scheduling practices across projects
Career Development Opportunities
This office-based position offers a pathway from field construction or project engineering into preconstruction and project scheduling, with opportunities to expand proficiency in P6, baseline schedules, construction sequencing, project controls, and planning under experienced leadership.
