Preceptor, Lead CDL Instructor, Transportation Innovation Center
About the role
The Department of Transportation and Logistics Training Academy at the Transportation Center is seeking a Support Staff member to provide program support for both the CDL Training Programs and the State CDL Testing Center. The position requires a full range of responsibilities including hands-on CDL training as a State Licensed CDL Instructor and support as a State Certified CDL Examiner.
Responsibilities
- Supports the CDL Training Specialist in the training of CDL students, in any area of instruction, daily.
- Serves as a State Certified CDL Examiner when required.
- Provides advice, guidance, and feedback to CDL students in the CDL Training program and CDL Test candidates.
- Reinforces instruction to both CDL students and CDL Test candidates by utilizing a variety of learning modalities to help improve their outcomes.
- Maintains records of the CDL Testing Center outcomes.
- Supports all programs within the Transportation and Logistics Training Center.
- Assists with maintaining accurate student records and CDL Test candidate test scores, when acting as a CDL Examiner.
- Participates in program and division committees, as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
- Significant related experience may substitute for education.
- Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated verifiable professional CDL Class “A” driving experience in all weather conditions.
- Current CDL Class "A" license with all endorsements except Hazardous Materials.
- Licensed CDL Instructor by the Ohio Driver Training Office (with Training Manger Endorsement).
- Certified by the State of Ohio as a CDL Examiner or obtain certification within a reasonable period of time as agreed upon by hiring manager.
- Verifiable clean driving record with no more than two (2) points and/or one (1) moving violation in the previous three years from application date.
- No record of Operating Vehicle While Intoxicated (OVI), Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Reckless Operation convictions.
- Meets the College’s insurability requirements.
- Passes a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and drug screening examination.
- No felony convictions within the previous ten years from application date; capable of passing Ohio BCI and FBI background checks.
- Demonstrated experience effectively making decisions that have major implications on the strategy, management and operations within a department.
- Demonstrated effectiveness in a role requiring dynamic and abstract problem-solving methods in adaptive situations.

Benefits
The position offers a competitive starting salary range of $60,000 to $70,000, which will be based upon an assessment of internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications in relation to the minimum and/or preferred job requirement(s).
Pay
The target starting salary range is $60,000 to $70,000.
Schedule
The work schedule is flexible, with hours typically between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM, with a day off during the week as program requirements dictate.
