About the Role

A Tennessee public school preschool teaching assistant (or paraprofessional) supports the lead teacher in fostering a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for children under age 5.

Responsibilities

• Assist in implementing daily lesson plans, organizing materials, setting up learning centers, and managing classroom flow.
• Work with children individually or in small groups to reinforce lessons on letters, numbers, shapes, and social skills.
• Ensure the safety of children on the playground, during activities, and in the classroom to prevent injury.
• Guide children in social-emotional development, encouraging positive interactions and helping with conflict resolution.
• Assist children with self-help skills, including toileting, feeding, and dressing.
• Assist in observing, recording, and reporting on student progress and developmental milestones.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A high school diploma or equivalent is typically required; many roles prefer or require at least an Associate's degree or two years of college.
• For positions in Title I schools, assistants must meet federal "Highly Qualified" standards, which include an Associate's degree or passing a state/local academic assessment (e.g., ParaPro test).
• Possession of a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential is often preferred or required.

Work Environment

• Generally, 10-month contracts aligned with the public school calendar.
• Active, fast-paced classroom setting focused on early childhood development.
