Pre Analytical Technician, Lab Service Center - Full-Time, Rotating Shift

About the role

The Pre Analytical Technician plays a crucial role in the Orland Park Lab Service Center of UChicago Medicine. This position involves specimen receipt, assessment, pre-analytical processing, and quality assurance.

Responsibilities

• Receive and accession specimens, ensuring accurate identification and proper billing.
• Label and order specimens according to laboratory policies and procedures.
• Determine the acceptability of submitted specimens and ensure proper storage and handling.
• Conduct preliminary specimen preparations, including centrifugation and aliquoting.
• May handle hazardous materials and perform phlebotomy and bone marrow procedures.
• Perform waived testing as assigned and report results accurately and timely.
• Collaborate with techs and leadership to ensure correct reporting of test results.
• Document troubleshooting and problem-solving efforts to resolve issues.
• Communicate with patients and colleagues to provide patient-focused care.
• Prepare and maintain adequate stock of reagents and control materials.
• Assist in training and validating new testing, procedures, and equipment.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in science preferred. Clinical laboratory or phlebotomy experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Knowledge and ability to use laboratory and hospital information systems.
• Knowledge and ability to use automated and conventional laboratory equipment.
• Ability to interact professionally with individuals at all levels.

Skills

Proficient and safe use of all equipment necessary for the completion of all duties and responsibilities.
