PR & Communications Manager (Volunteer)

About the role

Stoop Stories is a Brooklyn‑based nonprofit that connects NYC neighbors across generations through documentary storytelling and community events. The organization has been featured in 59+ press stories and has won multiple awards. The volunteer will help build on this momentum by expanding the organization’s press presence across NYC. BIPOC creatives are especially encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

• Generate and distribute newsletters (via Mailchimp) and press releases.
• Conduct outreach to local organizations and publications to build press coverage.
• Develop and implement strategic communications plans, ensuring consistent messaging across channels.
• Manage content for the website alongside newsletters and press materials.
• Stay current on relevant news, press opportunities, and media trends.
• Track outreach efforts and share updates with the team.

Ideal Candidate

• Background in marketing/communications and/or journalism with strong written communication skills.
• Experience with press outreach, media pitching, or newsletter writing.
• Comfort with email marketing tools like Mailchimp (or similar).
• A warm, human voice in writing and a genuine passion for storytelling, NYC culture, and community‑based nonprofit work.
• Comfort researching and identifying relevant local publications, journalists, and community organizations.
• Self‑driven with strong organizational skills.

Schedule

Remote, flexible, approximately 5‑10 hours per week. NYC‑based candidates are encouraged.
