About the role
The Lead Power Systems Engineer will function as a Lead or Senior Engineer, studying energy optimization, power system coordination and arc flash hazard analysis, and electrical reliability analysis. They will coordinate with local electrical utilities, review supplier submittals, act as a liaison between the local design team, client and remote design teams for I&C design, and support business development related to enhanced Electrical services.
Responsibilities
- Studies - Energy Optimization, Power System Coordination and Arc Flash Hazard Analysis, and Electrical Reliability Analysis
- Construction inspection and resolution of electrical construction issues
- Cordination with local electrical utilities on project technical needs
- Review of supplier submittals
- Act as a liaison between the local design team, client and remote design teams for I&C design
- Start up and testing of major electrical equipment
- Additional Project Opportunities: Lead Electrical design for water/wastewater projects
- Provide technical guidance on client standards and expectations to engineering and technician staff in the regional design centers that are supporting project detailed design
- Serve as technical expert in electrical power distribution and miscellaneous plant electrical systems for client consultations
- Support business development related to enhanced Electrical services
- Build business relationships with clients to understand needs and drivers
Requirements
- Professional Engineer's license
- 5+ years in electrical design, planning and construction services
- Consulting and Water/Wastewater experience preferred
- Experience in medium and low voltage power distribution equipment, including variable frequency drives and standby diesel generators
- Understanding of PLC hardware and software setup, network configuration, HMI, SCADA system, instrumentation and fiber optic cabling
- Experience in a client-facing/business development role
- Power system analysis experience in SKM, ETAP, or other analysis software a plus
Qualifications
- Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program
- Minimum of 5 years related work experience

- Continues to learn and apply independent knowledge and interpretation about departmental design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and Black and Veatch policies and procedures
- Consistently and independently applies knowledge and complies with Black and Veatch quality program
- Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables
- Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection
- Manages assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements
- Reviews lower level engineering work or assignments
- Provides guidance and direction to others from the same project and discipline
- Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts
- Designs a complete project of moderately complex scope within an assigned practice area(s)

Schedule
The role is hybrid: 2 days per week remote, 3 days per week in-office.
