About the role
The Lead Power Systems Engineer position at Black & Veatch is a hybrid role, requiring 2 days per week remote and 3 days per week in-office. This role supports projects within the Governments & Environment market sector, focusing on innovative solutions and integrated planning, design, and construction support for mission-critical facilities.
Responsibilities
- Studies - Energy Optimization, Power System Coordination and Arc Flash Hazard Analysis, and Electrical Reliability Analysis
- Construction inspection and resolution of electrical construction issues
- Coordination with local electrical utilities on project technical needs
- Review of supplier submittals
- Act as a liaison between the local design team, client and remote design teams for I&C design
- Start up and testing of major electrical equipment
- Additional Project Opportunities - Lead Electrical design for water/wastewater projects
- Provide technical guidance on client standards and expectations to engineering and technician staff in the regional design centers
- Serve as technical expert in electrical power distribution and miscellaneous plant electrical systems for client consultations
- Support business development related to enhanced Electrical services
- Build business relationships with clients to understand needs and driver
Requirements
- Professional Engineer's license
- 5+ years in electrical design, planning and construction services
- Consulting and Water/Wastewater experience preferred
- Experience in medium and low voltage power distribution equipment, including variable frequency drives and standby diesel generators
- Understanding of PLC hardware and software setup, network configuration, HMI, SCADA system, instrumentation and fiber optic cabling
- Experience in a client-facing/business development role
- Power system analysis experience in SKM, ETAP, or other analysis software a plus
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program
- Minimum of 5 years related work experience

- Provides guidance and direction to others from the same project and discipline
- Supports continuous improvement and change management efforts
- Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables
- Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection
- Manages assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements
- Plans and conducts independent evaluation, selection and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria
- Reviews lower level engineering work or assignments
- Is responsible for one or more of the following: overseeing collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work; leading smaller production teams; and serving as the responsible charge for a project
- Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects
- Assists with identification of key client interests and drivers on less complex projects
- Communicates client interests and drivers to project team members and develops approaches to accommodate these concerns in the performance of the work on less complex projects
- May provide support to business development or pursuit activities
- Knowledge Sharing, Innovation And Technology - Recognized as a technical specialist by the division having in-depth knowledge of an engineering process and/or of technical aspects of an industry
- Designs a complete project of moderately complex scope within an assigned practice area(s)
