Key Skills and Responsibilities

  • Operations Oversight: Ensure continuous, reliable, and efficient power generation by directing the operations teams in the safe operation and maintenance of the plant and DOT-regulated pipelines.
  • Incident Command & Crisis Management: Act as Incident Commander when needed, coordinating, and overseeing incident response and decision-making to ensure safety and quick resolution.
  • Union Workforce Management: Effectively lead a team of union personnel, fostering a collaborative and productive environment while respecting union protocols and ensuring compliance.
  • Technical Support & Problem-Solving: Provide technical guidance, address operational challenges, and troubleshoot issues as they arise to maintain safe, efficient plant operation.
  • Safety & Compliance: Uphold safety standards and regulatory compliance, prioritizing operational safety and implementing best practices for risk management.
  • DOT Pipeline Program: Hold responsibility over the operation of DOT-regulated pipelines, which includes recognizing abnormal operating conditions, directing operations personnel to perform covered tasks, making necessary notifications as required by the operation and maintenance plans, and initiating necessary corrective actions.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Five (5) years power plant experience in operations and/or engineering positions.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role.
  • Knowledge of plant processes and operating procedures for boilers, turbines, generators, and related equipment in a power plant.

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications

  • Control Operator experience.
  • Eligible to be DOT Certified.
  • Personal Computer proficiency including working knowledge of Maximo or similar computerized work management program, Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Experience or knowledge of business practices and processes in power plant generation business including budget development, labor relations, and environmental and safety regulations.
  • Ability to analyze interactions of complex instruments, controls, process and human operators to monitor plant processes, and identify and solve problems quickly, independently, and effectively in order to correct abnormal plant conditions and maintain safe reliable plant operations.
  • Ability to perform duties and direct personnel calmly and effectively in emergency and time critical conditions.
  • Ability to observe work and remain alert while working under stress and adverse conditions for extended periods of time and at irregular hours.

Major Accountabilities

  • Guides and leads team members by providing supervision, coaching, mentoring, performance management, training and discipline.
  • Supervises personnel to ensure the units respond to fluctuations in demand and that operations and maintenance activities are completed in accordance with the standards and expectations for the day-to-day operation of the plant (Fossil Generation Conduct of Shift Operations).
  • Leads the plant configuration control programs that are designed to ensure the plant components and systems are always configured in a known manner and capable of performing their design function.
  • Enhances overall plant performance through involvement in day-to-day activities by monitoring, coaching and leading in areas that may indirectly affect operations, such as material condition and work control processes.
  • Assists the Work Management process by reviewing incoming work orders and backlogs for placement in work weeks. Develops and writes lock out/tag outs (LOTOs).
  • Supports maintenance activities by assuming the APS representative duties as needed and coordinating contract work on back-shifts and weekends.
  • Participates in all aspects of Operations Department management to support safe and efficient operation of the plant including the development, implementation and performance monitoring of all corporate, site and business goals and objectives.
