Power Plant Operator - Anaktuvuk Pass
About the role
The North Slope Borough operates, monitors, and maintains generators, switchgear controls, motor control centers, and equipment associated with mechanical equipment used to monitor and distribute electricity. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring these systems operate efficiently and safely.
Responsibilities
- Maintains oil and fluid levels of power plant equipment according to standard procedures and Borough policy.
- Maintains water temperatures and pressures, making necessary adjustments.
- Operates and maintains stationary engines, generator sets, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Maintains generator cooling systems, checking and testing for recommended levels.
- Changes oil, fuel, and air filters as needed.
- Keeps a daily log of equipment performance, power output, generator operations, and power and fuel outages.
- Assists the Lead Power Plant Operator and Village Services Supervisor with inventory management, including requesting, receiving, and storing supplies and equipment.
- Inspects and cleans equipment and facility, reporting maintenance needs and deficiencies to the supervisor.
- Complies with all safety rules and regulations, attends safety meetings, and responds to power plant alarms and failures.
- May be required to work non-traditional schedules, including evenings, holidays, weekends, and 24-hour on-call status.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Required: High school graduate or GED, or a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience. Required certifications include Incident Command System (IS) 100, IS 200, IS 700, IS 800; CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid; RCRA, HAZWOPER, and SPCC training. Must comply with the Borough's nepotism law and live in the same residence as the Department Director or Immediate Supervisor if applicable.
Qualifications
Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies, and procedures. Ability to obtain specific training related to the job, such as IS 100, IS 200, IS 700, IS 800, CPR, AED, Basic First Aid, RCRA, HAZWOPER, SPCC, and Small Quantity Handler training.
Skills
Ability to operate and maintain various types of electrical and mechanical equipment, including generators, switchgear, and motor control centers. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols.
