Power Line Technician
About the role
The position serves as the High Voltage Specialist responsible for maintenance, electrical distribution underground/overhead systems, transformers power metering, electric system closed high speed networking, and all smart grid equipment & technologies. This position also needs to be familiar with the Geographic Information System (GIS), EDS switching procedures, working knowledge from the IBM Maximo system, and the ability to work with contractors on the EDS system.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and operate all roadways, parking lots and area lighting systems, presently comprised of 3,319 lights.
- Responsible for maintenance, electrical distribution underground/overhead systems, transformers power metering, electric system closed high speed networking, and all smart grid equipment & technologies.
- Familiarity with the Geographic Information System (GIS), EDS switching procedures, working knowledge from the IBM Maximo system, and the ability to work with contractors on the EDS system.
- Work within manholes and indoor/outdoor electrical substations, including working within inclement weather conditions.
- Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, truck-mounted hold diggers/cranes, and cable splicing equipment.
- Manage hazardous materials such as solvents, dielectrics, and fumes.
- Make decisions under mental pressure regarding electric service/restoration, exercising safety concern for people and facilities.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalency and six months of electrical experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Requires certification(s).
Qualifications
- Physical Effort: Working within manholes, outdoor electrical substations, and handling hazardous materials.
- Hazardous materials: Solvents, dielectrics, and fumes.
- Good depth perception, ability to work on a pole at high levels, and ability to work in close or confined spaces for extended periods of time.
- Commercial drivers' license (CDL) issued by the NC DMW administered by Environment, Health & Safety (EHS).
- Participation in the Random Drug Testing Program as part of the Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance for Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL).
- Emergency Duty/Severe Weather Essential and Communicable Disease Mandatory.
Skills
- Knowledge of GIS, EDS switching procedures, and IBM Maximo system.
- Working knowledge of smart grid equipment & technologies.
- Ability to work with contractors on the EDS system.
Benefits
- Sign-on bonus of $4460 available for the successful applicant, paid in 2 installments within 12 months of hire.
Pay
$44,653 - $60,000
Schedule
Monday – Friday 7:00AM – 3:30PM On-call Rotation to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Position is Emergency Duty (reports to work during a University emergency), Adverse Weather (reports to work during snow, hurricane, etc.), and Communicable Disease Mandatory Primary (reports to work during public health emergencies).
