About the role

The Finishing Department Powder Coater applies primer powder or colored top coat onto frames and parts with high efficiency and effectiveness. Frames and parts vary in shape and size, requiring attention to powder thickness, complete coverage, transfer efficiency, power usage, and ensuring powder reaches cracks and crevices for the highest quality finish.

Responsibilities

• Apply powder coatings onto steel and aluminum furniture frames and parts using a powder application gun.
• Verify correct settings on the powder coating gun control panel for the color powder before spraying.
• Maintain a spraying distance of approximately 12 inches from the part for optimal transfer efficiency and coverage.
• Perform daily checks:
  • Ensure proper grounding from the powder application machine to the finishing line.
  • Inspect the powder hopper, gun, and lines for proper operation.
  • Check parts weekly for wear to maintain optimal spray pattern and transfer efficiency.
  • Observe the conveyor to ensure smooth operation without unnecessary stops or jerking.
  • Verify the dust collection system is operating properly.
• Train and familiarize yourself with powder mil thickness (1 mil = one-thousandth of an inch) to apply the correct amount of powder for protection and appearance.
• Monitor the powder application for unusual color, texture, particle size, or clumpiness; stop spraying and notify a supervisor if abnormalities are observed.
• Ensure complete coverage of frames, avoiding missed spots or insufficient mil thickness based on specific powder requirements.
• Apply primer undercoat or color topcoat following established standards and specifications.
• Use proper safety equipment and procedures at all times.
• Inspect work for quality to meet established standards and specifications.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Document and report all quality issues, rejects, or out-of-specification items to the Department Lead and Production Manager weekly.
• Adhere to the company’s work and workplace safety policies and procedures.
• Report employees not wearing proper safety equipment or committing safety violations to a Lead, Supervisor, or Manager.
• Notify the Department Lead, Supervisor, or Manager immediately of any serious safety situations requiring correction.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• At least one year of experience in powder coating or a related field.
• Ability to speak English and Spanish.
• Basic mathematical skills, including addition and subtraction.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to complete written and oral instructions.

Physical Demands

• Regular use of hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms at waist level.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Weave lightweight metal strips in a crisscross pattern and rivet them together using a single rivet machine.
• Stack, inventory, and store riveted parts for furniture production.

Work Environment

The role involves exposure to moving mechanical equipment and a light industrial manufacturing environment with consistent noise levels.
