About the role
The Surgical Cardiac Tech II plays a crucial role in the operating room under the guidance of a Registered Nurse. They are responsible for applying, demonstrating, and possessing advanced knowledge, competencies, and skills in surgical and aseptic techniques and practices. This position assists the surgical team, prepares, sterilizes, and cleans surgical equipment and instruments, and cares for patients.
Responsibilities
- Performs complex surgical procedures requiring advanced knowledge, skills, and ability to adapt to the operative procedure.
- Adheres to safety standards and policies, including surgical, specimen collection, sterile processing, Title 22, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
- Applies principles of aseptic technique and takes immediate corrective action when breaks in aseptic technique occur.
- Maintains continuous communication with the circulating nurse and other surgical team members regarding patient status and surgery progress.
- Arranges and inventory sterile setups for operations.
- Facilitates the smooth flow of surgical interventions by preparing preference cards, updating instrument knowledge, and assisting with setup.
- Performs scrub role, anticipating surgical team's needs, passing instruments, cutting sutures, etc.
- Prepares, cleans, and maintains surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies according to established guidelines.
- Transports patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens.
- Prepares operating rooms by setting up tables, instruments, and supplies according to the type of case.
- Trains students and participates in decision-making activities related to surgical equipment, instruments, and supplies.
- Participates in process improvement projects.
- Mentors and leads other surgical technicians.
- Assists in performing circulating skills and tasks.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technician Program.
- One year of experience in a Surgical Technician role.
- Active practice as a Surgical Technician within the last six months.
- Valid Surgical Technologist - CST certification from accreditation organizations CAAHEP or ABHES.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
- Fire Life Safety Training (LA City).
Qualifications
- Preferred: Experience in difficult surgical/operative procedures (Head, Neck, Neuro, Spine, Ortho).
- Preferred: Mentorship and leadership experience.

Pay
The hourly rate range for this position is $34.50 - $58.65. Additionally, there is a $7/hour cardiac differential.
