The Morimoto Lab at the University of California, San Diego, seeks multiple postdoctoral scholars for an exciting new project focusing on autonomous, soft, tip-extending robots for stroke treatment. The project aims to develop a novel robotic system capable of navigating vessels with severe tortuosity and curvature, which is currently challenging even for experts.

About the role

  • Work directly with Dr. Tania Morimoto (Morimoto Lab) and collaborators from various institutions.
  • Collaborate on design, fabrication, modeling, planning, controls, integration, and testing of the soft robotic system.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary research involving mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and medical device development.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and testing of autonomous navigation algorithms for complex vascular systems.
  • Design and fabricate prototypes of the soft robotic components.
  • Collaborate with co-investigators at Stanford University, UC Santa Barbara, Vanderbilt University, UNC Chapel Hill, University of Missouri Kansas City, GE Healthcare, EndoTheia, and Vine Medical.
  • Write technical reports and present findings at conferences and workshops.

Requirements

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with a strong background in robotics.
  • A solid publication record in top-level robotics venues.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Basic qualifications: PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Additional qualifications: Experience with hardware/system integration and interdisciplinary collaboration is preferred.
