Postdoctoral Research Scholar
Duties and Responsibilities
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will be working in the area of compounding and cascading extreme weather events. Research tasks include statistical analysis of historical observations and model simulations of compounding events and evaluation of data-driven earth system model simulations for compounding events. The postdoc researcher will support multiple NOAA and NSF funded projects by collaborating with researchers from NC State University, NOAA, and international collaborators. This position is located in Asheville, NC.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
- Participate in unit (NCICS, NCEI, project teams, etc.) activities and meetings.
- Make timely presentations at appropriate scientific venues as required.
- Prepare and publish peer-reviewed research on activity results.
- Prepare and submit grant applications for extramural support.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Essential Job Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Earth or environmental science (atmospheric science, geography, etc.), mathematics, statistics, computer sciences, or related fields.
- Completion of Ph.D. by start date of appointment.
- Experience with analysis of large observational and/or model climate datasets.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
- Personal enthusiasm for the project goals.
- Able to multitask and meet deadlines.
- Able to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.
Prioritized Qualifications:
- Experience with the CMIP suite and/or regional climate modeling datasets and analyses.
- Experience with historical station observations and remotely sensed datasets.
- Experience with the statistical analysis of compounding extreme weather events.
- Experience with modern methods for statistical analysis of weather and climate extremes.

Pay
Anticipated Hiring Range: $55,000 - $65,000 DOQ

Monday - Friday, 8AM - 5PM
