Postdoctoral Research Associate - Photonic Quantum Sensing and Computing
for section headings (e.g. About the role, Responsibilities, Requirements, Qualifications, Skills, Benefits, Pay, Schedule). Likely they expect only those headings. So we must map all content into those sections. We can put Special Requirements under Requirements (maybe as a sublist). Also the reference submission instructions etc could be under Requirements or maybe under About the role? Better under Requirements.
We must not repeat the job title as a heading. The page already shows it, so we don't add Postdoctoral Research Associate
. Good.
We must not put Job ID/requisition numbers as headings; we can drop them or fold into a short
. The instruction: "do NOT put Job ID / requisition numbers as headings — fold minor metadata into a short
or drop it." So we can include a short paragraph at top maybe with the Requisition Id? But they said fold minor metadata into a short
or drop it. Probably we can drop it entirely. Safer to drop it. We must remove cookie/navigation/legal/EEO/equal-opportunity/scam-warning boilerplate, duplicated lines, and application instructions. However we need to keep substantive info like reference submission instructions? Those are application instructions. The instruction says remove application instructions. But we need to preserve ALL substantive information; do NOT invent or summarize away detail. However application instructions like "Please submit three letters of reference when applying to this position." is arguably part of the application process, not substantive job content. The instruction says remove application instructions. So we should remove that. Similarly instructions to upload documents, etc. Also the bit about Real ID compliant form of identification, PIV card, background check, foreign national residency - those are requirements for employment, not just application instructions. They are substantive eligibility requirements. So we keep those. The bit about "This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired." is also application timing; maybe remove as boilerplate? It's not exactly boilerplate but could be considered administrative. The instruction says remove duplicated lines and application instructions. This is more like posting duration; could be considered administrative. I'd remove it. Also the bit about accepted file types, size limit, third party vendor resumes not accepted, contact email for trouble applying, ORNL is equal opportunity employer, UT-Battelle is E-Verify employer. Those are boilerplate/legal/EEO. Remove. We must preserve all substantive information: overview, duties, basic qualifications, preferred qualifications, special requirements (PhD timing, appointment length, reference letters? Actually reference letters is application instruction; we remove that), eligibility requirements (ID, PIV, background check, foreign national residency), ORNL description, benefits list. We need to ensure we don't include filler like "commensurate with experience", "not specified", etc. Not present. Now craft HTML. Structure:
About the role
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on experimental research in photonic quantum sensing and computing. This position resides in the Quantum Sensing and Computing Group in the Computational Science and Engineering Division (CSED), Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Responsibilities
- Participate in new and ongoing research in experimental photonic quantum sensing and computing, including optomechanical sensors and transducers, generation and characterization of photonic quantum resource states, and use of photonic quantum states for quantum computing.
- Formulate novel quantum sensing and computing solutions to problems of national interest and support the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
- Interpret, report, and present research concepts and results to national audiences at all levels.
- Write peer-reviewed scientific articles and present research findings at major scientific conferences.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service.
- Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Requirements
- A PhD in physics or a related field completed within the last 5 years.
- Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
- The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension; initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
- For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required.
- All employees must be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.
- To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation, including a declaration of illegal drug activities (including use, supply, possession, or manufacture) within the last year (marijuana and cannabis derivatives are still considered illegal under federal law).
- For foreign national candidates: If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
Qualifications
- General experimental research experience in quantum optics, optomechanics, optical cavities, and/or photonic quantum sensing and computing.
- Experience with control electronics, data acquisition systems, machine learning and AI for control and optimization of experimental apparatus.
- Experience with vacuum and cryo systems.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
