Postdoctoral Research Associate- IRIS Lab
About the role
The Innovative Robotics and Interactive Systems (IRIS) Lab at Notre Dame seeks a postdoctoral position focusing on the sensing and control of soft growing vine-inspired robots for urban search and rescue applications. This project is funded by and collaborates with MIT Lincoln Laboratory. Learn more about the project and the lab here.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to high-quality publications and field demonstrations of novel soft/continuum robot sensing and control strategies using acoustic sensors, inertial measurement units, and visual cameras.
- Collaborate with colleagues and visiting speakers in robotics.
- Engage in professional development tailored to individual goals.
- Interact with graduate and undergraduate students.
Requirements
- Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, robotics, or related field.
- Potential Qualifications: Background in soft/continuum robot sensing and control, proficiency in ROS, Python, C++, MATLAB, and Arduino.

- Strong interest in robotics and urban search and rescue applications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- High level of initiative and motivation to drive the project forward.
- Enthusiasm for professional development and that of graduate/undergraduate students.
Skills
- Proficiency in soft/continuum robot sensing and control.
- Experience with ROS, Python, C++, MATLAB, and Arduino.
