Brookhaven National Laboratory · Upton, NY · 1 wk ago
Analyst$82k–$85k/yrFull-time

Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to perform characterization of well-defined metal, oxide, and oxide/metal surfaces using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). This role is a key part of a U.S. Department of Energy-funded project focused on catalyst characterization and mechanistic studies related to C1 chemistry, including CO₂ hydrogenation and methane activation and conversion on model catalysts.

About the Role

The research will utilize a combination of a variable temperature ultra-high vacuum STM and a STM capable of operating under moderate pressures (up to 100 Torr) and temperatures. Parallel investigations will include surface chemistry of C1 processes using infrared spectroscopy and ambient-pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (both lab-based and synchrotron-based).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct STM studies on well-defined metal, oxide, and oxide/metal surfaces.
  • Perform surface chemistry investigations of C1 processes using infrared spectroscopy and ambient-pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.
  • Collaborate on mechanistic studies linked to CO₂ hydrogenation and methane activation/conversion.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to safety, ethical conduct, and operational excellence.

Requirements

  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in scanning tunneling microscopy and surface science.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely, ethically, and with personal accountability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with spectroscopy techniques such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy.
  • Research experience at synchrotron facilities.

Additional Information

This is an initial 2-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on performance and funding. Candidates must have completed all degree requirements by the start of employment. Brookhaven Laboratory policy limits research associate appointments to a combined total of 5 years of relevant postdoctoral and/or R&D experience, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness, or other life-changing events.

Brookhaven National Laboratory requires non-badged personnel, including visitors, to produce REAL-ID or REAL-ID-compliant documentation for federal site access. Additionally, as a U.S. Department of Energy laboratory, employees must obtain and maintain a DOE Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) credential in accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12).

Pay

The full salary range for this position is $82,000–$85,000 per year, with placement and salary commensurate with experience, qualifications, and internal peer group considerations.

Benefits

Brookhaven National Laboratory offers a comprehensive employee benefits program as part of its compensation package. More information can be found at the BNL Benefits Program page.
