Description of Research Project

The fellow’s main research project would be part of a funded 5-year grant from the NIMH focused on the neural basis of depression. Successful applicants will use nonhuman primate behavior, electrophysiological recordings, chemogenetic activation, fMRI, and deep brain stimulation to investigate the how frontal cortex and interconnected structures are involved in controlling affective behavior in the context of depression.

Technical Duties

  • Train non-human primates to perform behavioral tasks
  • Record neural activity
  • Conduct neurosurgeries with the laboratory team
  • Acquire structural and functional MRI data
  • Be well versed in analysis of high-dimensional neural data

Educational and other Requirements for the position

PhD in neuroscience or psychology
Experience Required: >3 years working with non-human primates in a neuroscience setting.

Goals/Outcomes of the Research Project

The goal of the research project is to determine how one part of the frontal cortex, the subcallosal anterior cingulate cortex is involved in depression and how treatments directly targeted to this area directly ameliorate negative mood.

Compensation

The salary range for the role is $72,500 - $80,000 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need.
