Argonne National Laboratory’s Applied Materials Division (AMD) is seeking a Postdoctoral candidate in organic chemistry and electrochemistry with a focus on battery electrolyte materials.

About the role

This position will primarily involve organic synthesis lab work and analysis of new materials, with some supplemental electrochemical testing. The candidate will design or modify laboratory procedures and protocols, develop experimental designs, run technical experiments, make detailed observations, gather and analyze data, and effectively report results.

The role requires hands-on laboratory work to develop and synthesize new organic materials and to carry out and analyze results of analytical and electrochemical tests for new battery electrolyte materials.

Responsibilities

  • Perform organic synthesis and analysis of new materials.
  • Conduct electrochemical testing of battery electrolyte materials.
  • Design or modify laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Develop experimental designs and run technical experiments.
  • Make detailed observations, gather and analyze data, and report results.
  • Maintain organized notebooks and project files.
  • Communicate effectively and on a timely basis with supervisory personnel regarding laboratory developments.

Requirements

  • Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (typically completed within the last 0-5 years) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or related fields.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in organic chemistry and synthesis.
  • Experience with electrochemistry and chemical/electrochemical analysis (recommended but not required).
  • Ability to work on-site at the Argonne campus in Lemont, Illinois, five days per week.
  • Proven ability to be an excellent team player.

Pay

The expected hiring range for this position is $72,879.00–$121,465.00. Pay offered will be determined based on factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate qualifications, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
