Postdoctoral Appointee - MSD Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
About the role
The Materials Science Division (MSD) of Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a postdoctoral appointee in experimental condensed matter physics. The position is supported by a DOE-funded research program on ultrafast science involving Argonne National Laboratory, University of Washington, and MIT. The goal of this program is to understand and harness the nonequilibrium correlation between structural, charge, and spin/pseudospin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional (2D) materials.
Responsibilities
- Conceive, plan, and implement scientific research related to the experimental characterization of ultrafast dynamics of 2D materials using a range of ultrafast techniques including terahertz, optical, and x-ray radiation.
- Analyze and understand complex data sets.
- Lead ultrafast x-ray scattering or electron scattering experiments if applicable.
- Work independently and collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Communicate findings effectively through reports and presentations.
Requirements
- A strong background in condensed matter physics and materials science.
- Research experiences in ultrafast science, particularly in applying time-resolved microscopy/spectroscopy and scattering techniques for quantum material research using advanced optical and THz techniques.
- Ability to analyze and understand complex data sets.
- Experience leading ultrafast x-ray scattering or electron scattering experiments (a plus).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics or Materials Science.
- Postdoctoral experience is preferred.
- Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
Skills
- Proficiency in ultrafast laser techniques.
- Experience with synchrotron or Free Electron Laser (FEL) based x-ray diffraction techniques.
- Knowledge of quantum materials and their ultrafast dynamics.
