Postdoctoral Appointee – Battery Imaging and Diagnostic Tools
Argonne National Laboratory’s Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division seeks a Postdoctoral Appointee to advance energy-storage research in the Aqueous Battery Laboratory.
About the role
This one-year appointment focuses on developing bench-scale micro-computed tomography and ultrasonic sensing methods to evaluate the state of charge and state of health of iron- and lead-based electrodes. Research will leverage the Advanced Photon Source (APS) and complementary techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder diffraction. The role encompasses both hardware and software tool development for operando characterization under electrochemical conditions, as well as management and analysis of large experimental datasets.
Responsibilities
- Develop and apply operando diagnostic tools for aqueous battery research
- Design, perform, and analyze electrochemical and materials characterization experiments
- Use imaging and sensing techniques, including micro-CT, ultrasonic methods, and x-ray-based characterization
- Contribute to hardware and software development for experimental platforms
- Process, interpret, and manage large datasets
- Present research results at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed literature
- Collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary and multi-institution research environment
Requirements
- Recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0-5 years) in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field
- Research background in energy storage systems
- Experience with in-situ and operando studies
- Skills in sample synthesis and preparation
- Familiarity with CAD software, 3D printing, and programming for data analysis
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including a record of publications
- Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with x-ray-based techniques to probe structure and reactivity under electrochemical conditions
- Training or specialization in x-ray science or battery characterization
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary research setting
Pay
The expected hiring range for this position is $72,879–$121,465 per year, determined by scope, qualifications, internal equity, and external market pay.
