Post Doctoral Scholar- Otolaryngology

AnalystFull-time

About the role

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will pursue specialized research training and gain advanced research experience in the Auditory Evoked Potential (AEP) Laboratory within the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University. The successful candidate will contribute to NIH-funded research with two major areas of focus: (1) investigating neural encoding and processing of electrical stimulation in the auditory nerve of adult and pediatric cochlear implant users under the mentorship of Dr. Shuman He; and (2) developing and validating a new humanized computational model of cochlear nerve responses to electrical stimulation under the mentorship of Dr. Ian Bruce. This work integrates experimental data from human cochlear implant users with computational modeling and simulation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform electrophysiological recordings of auditory nerve responses.
  • Conduct computational modeling and simulation of cochlear nerve responses.
  • Carry out psychophysical testing and speech perception assessments.
  • Develop computational models and software for data analysis.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
  • Prepare scientific manuscripts, conference presentations, and grant applications.
  • Contribute to the development of new research questions and design follow‑up studies as independence grows.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary training at the interface of auditory neuroscience, cochlear implant research, electrophysiology, and computational modeling.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computational neuroscience, neuroscience, computer science, hearing science, psychology, applied mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis and statistical methods.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaborative, interdisciplinary research teams.
  • Ability to work with diverse research participant populations.

Qualifications

  • Preferred experience in one or more of: computational programming, computational modeling or simulation, auditory neuroscience, cochlear implants, auditory electrophysiology, psychophysics, or speech perception research.
  • Strong computational or programming background with interest in applying expertise to auditory neuroscience and cochlear implant research.
  • Strong scientific motivation, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to developing an independent research career.
  • Successful completion of a background check (required).
  • May be required to complete a pre‑employment physical examination, including drug screening.
