About the Role

The Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory at Mass General Brigham is seeking a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Fellow for a 3-4 year appointment. This role focuses on the development of polymeric and hybrid materials for orthopaedic applications, with a current emphasis on antibacterial controlled release devices to address periprosthetic joint infection. The laboratory is a hub for translational research, involving materials conception, development, characterization, and preclinical safety and efficacy testing.

Responsibilities

  • Blending and compounding of polymeric blends of polyethylene with additives
  • Polymer processing into solid forms, including compression molding, extrusion, and injection molding
  • Post-processing such as radiation treatment or other cross-linking or sterilization methods
  • Physical, mechanical, tribological, and chemical characterization of consolidated polymers, including spectroscopy methods and thermal analysis
  • Advanced microscopy, including fluorescence imaging, confocal imaging, live imaging, and electron microscopy (SEM/TEM)
  • Concentration and chemical analysis of eluents from polymers using analytical techniques such as HPLC and LC-MS
  • Supervising biomedical research engineers in experimental work and presentation
  • Collaborating with team members and external partners to support delivery device formulation and preclinical studies for safety and efficacy

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Polymer Science, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field with appropriate experience
  • Strong background in polymeric materials
  • Experience in polymer processing, 3D printing, and polymer characterization preferred
  • Familiarity with analytical chemistry methods is a plus

Pay

The compensation range for this role is between $70,000 and $71,500. Final compensation will be determined based on years of relevant experience, skills, and internal equity.
