Post Doctoral Research Associate in Microbiology, Derré Lab
About the role
The Derré Lab at the University of Virginia focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Chlamydia infection. Research includes studying host–pathogen interactions, bacterial progression through the developmental cycle, and lipid acquisition. The lab also develops 3D in vitro models to investigate Chlamydia infection biology.
Responsibilities
- Participate in research discussions and lead the preparation of scientific communications, including figures, manuscripts, grant applications, abstracts, and presentations for conferences.
- Contribute to lab-wide research support activities in a collaborative and collegial environment.
Requirements
- Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field.
- Preferred Qualifications: Training and experience in BSL-2, documented publications, experience in cell culture, molecular biology, host–pathogen interactions, or microscopy, strong organizational skills, high level of motivation, excellent communication skills, willingness to mentor and apply for funding.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree within nine (9) months of the start date of the appointment.
- Preferred Qualifications: Experience in one or more of the following areas: primary and/or transformed cell culture, molecular biology, cell biology, host–pathogen interactions, or microscopy.
Skills
- Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, and meet established deadlines.
- High level of motivation, intellectual engagement, and technical aptitude to independently drive a research project.
- Willingness to mentor junior members of the laboratory.
- Willingness to apply for independent funding opportunities.
- Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills in English.

Schedule
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel to attend meetings and programs may be required.
