About the Role

The Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry at Emory University invites applications for the NEH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Poetics for the academic year 2027-28. This fellowship supports research projects that leverage Emory’s archival holdings in poetry, particularly the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library within the Stuart A. Rose Manuscripts, Archives and Rare Book Library. Applicants are encouraged to engage with the Center’s interdisciplinary theme of Humanities Plural, though projects need not address it directly. Fellows will join a community of scholars and contribute to conversations around methodological, theoretical, or conceptual issues in the humanities.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct research within the field of poetics, utilizing Emory’s archival collections.
  • Participate in a weekly interdisciplinary seminar and present research at one of these meetings.
  • Teach one undergraduate class in the College of Arts and Sciences during the fellowship term.
  • Prepare and publish scientific manuscripts under the direction of a Principal Investigator.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and contribute to the intellectual life of the Fox Center.
  • If renewed for a second year, take on additional teaching responsibilities with mentorship from Emory faculty.

Requirements

  • Hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D., DPhil, or equivalent) in a relevant field by June 30, 2027. Applicants may not have received their doctorate before January 1, 2024.
  • Demonstrate excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collegially in an interdisciplinary environment.
  • Preference given to applicants who have not held prior postdoctoral fellowships.
  • Scholars from outside the U.S. must meet visa requirements (J-1 or F-1 OPT) and comply with Emory’s policies.

Benefits

  • Stipend of $62,000 for the academic year (August 1, 2027–July 31, 2028).
  • Research budget of $2,000.
  • One-time moving allowance of $2,000.
  • Eligibility for competitive benefits, including dental and vision care.
  • Access to Emory’s academic resources and professional development opportunities.

Schedule

Fellows are required to be in residence for the full term of the fellowship (August 1, 2027–July 31, 2028). The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year contingent on satisfactory progress and funding availability. Remote work options may be granted at the department’s discretion.

Application deadline: December 7, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET. Letters of recommendation due by December 11, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET.
