Post Doctoral Fellow - Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

About the Role

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Houston. The project will focus on developing machine learning–based approaches to predict structure–property relationships, including damage evolution, in recyclable composite materials. The successful candidate will work at the interface of computational mechanics, materials science, and machine learning to develop next-generation predictive models of composite behavior. The project is highly collaborative and involves interactions with researchers from academia, a leading applied research organization, and industry.

Responsibilities

• Applies comprehensive knowledge in area of specialization to complete assignments that cross fields of specialization.
• Develops leadership and management skills, including planning for and assigning personnel to projects.
• Reviews progress and evaluates results of experiments or projects under control or supervisory responsibility.
• Recommends changes in research, testing, or experimental procedures.
• May be responsible for a single highly technical and complex piece of research equipment.
• May review and evaluate the effectiveness of personnel.
• Operates with latitude for unreviewed action; receives general supervision only in unusual situations.
• Performs other job-related duties as required.

Requirements

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
• Strong background in solid mechanics.
• Experience in computational micromechanics of materials.
• Experience with machine learning methods.

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience with modern machine learning tools and techniques.
• Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present research in group meetings, project reviews, and conferences.
