Position Overview
The PBIS Counselor plays a central role in helping students reflect on their choices, build positive social skills, and reengage successfully in the classroom—all within a caring, rich educational community.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with individual students or small groups to reflect on their behavior choices in the context of school-wide expectations
- Meet with individual students to provide support for behavior plans (e.g., check-in/check-out procedures, guiding reflection and self-assessment of behavioral expectations)
- Facilitate small groups focused on social skills development, friendship, and positive relationships
- Facilitate communication with and among staff and parents
- Provide input, as requested, to the MTSS/RtI/IEP process and parent/guardian conferences
- Maintain documentation of interactions with students, staff, and parents/guardians
- Absorb the de-escalation of dysregulated students
- Absorb the supervision of students during emergency/fire drills, assemblies, and field trips, providing escorts and assistance as necessary
Qualifications
- Education: Master's degree in behavioral sciences, education, or an educationally related field
- Must pass a Criminal History Record Check as required by Maine law
- Special Knowledge/Skills: Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with an understanding of the instructional process; ability to support students in de-escalation, redirection, and positive, proactive interactions aligned with individual behavior plans; ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community; willingness to participate in ongoing in-service training and to cross-train as part of a team approach; knowledge of emergencies, health, and safety issues preferred; commitment to maintaining a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality as required by law; experience: Demonstrated aptitude or competence for successful fulfillment of the assigned responsibilities; prior experience in the educational field is desirable
