Organizational Relationships
Reports to: Crew Chief and/or Superintendent
Directs: This is a non-supervisory position. May be asked to act as lead person of a crew to direct less experienced employees for job completion.
Other: Has regular contact with other county employees and occasionally with the general public
Essential Duties
- As a member of the road crew, will assist in the maintenance and construction of road and drainage projects using hand-held equipment
- Operates vehicles and equipment as directed. Equipment includes, but is not limited to, tractor-trailer, oil distributer, chip spreader, sweeper, roller, brush chipper, mower, dump truck, A-boom, pot-patcher and culvert cleaner
- Assist with traffic control for road and drainage projects
- Assist with clean-up of project sites, Road & Bridge facilities, equipment, machinery and vehicles
- Assist with maintenance of equipment, machinery and vehicles
- Attend departmental meetings
- Maintain after-hour availability for emergency construction and/or repairs
- Attend technical and safety training as appropriate and available
- Aid in training of other employees in proper operation of equipment, maintenance of equipment, safety procedures and county policies
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Methods, practices, equipment and materials used in the maintenance of roadways
- Provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of vehicles
- Safe operation of machinery and equipment used in the construction industry
- Follow directions
- Maintain an awareness of surroundings in a construction zone
- Perform assigned tasks in a safe manner
- Understand the organization and operation of the Road & Bridge system
- Communicate clearly and consistently
- Work independently in the absence of supervision
- Interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, department heads and employees
Experience and Training
- Valid Texas Commercial Drivers’ License
- High school graduation, or its equivalent, and ability to read and write
Physical Demands
- The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- May require moderate lifting frequently 10-30lbs, occasionally 40-50lbs, and rarely 50+ lbs.
- Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, and sitting for prolonged periods of time
- Frequently operates motor vehicle(s) and road construction equipment
- Ability to be on call and work overtime, if necessary
