About the role

The Portfolio Controller will serve as a hands-on finance leader responsible for establishing and strengthening the accounting and financial infrastructure across a growing portfolio of businesses. This role will partner closely with company leadership and operations teams to improve financial reporting, budgeting, cost visibility, controls, systems, and overall financial discipline. The ideal candidate is a proactive, operationally minded finance professional who is comfortable stepping into evolving environments, creating structure where limited processes currently exist, and balancing strategic oversight with hands-on execution.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a reliable financial reporting and accounting framework that provides leadership with timely, accurate, and actionable insight into business performance.
  • Evaluate current accounting practices and establish the policies, controls, processes, and financial infrastructure needed to support sustainable growth.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting processes, while monitoring financial performance across departments, projects, and business units.
  • Develop effective cost accounting and tracking methodologies to provide clear visibility into project, contract, labor, resource, and departmental profitability.
  • Monitor capital investments and expenditures against approved budgets and strategic priorities, highlighting significant variances and emerging risks to leadership.
  • Establish standardized monthly and periodic financial reporting packages, including financial statements, management reporting, variance analysis, and key performance indicators.
  • Partner with executive and operational leaders to strengthen financial planning, improve decision-making, enhance accountability, and drive overall business performance.
  • Coordinate audit preparation and financial reporting requirements, serving as a key liaison with external auditors, financial advisors, and other third-party partners.
  • Lead and support accounting transformations, process enhancements, and other initiatives that improve the accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of the finance organization.
  • Lead or contribute to ERP implementations, system upgrades, and financial technology initiatives, including integration with broader business systems and reporting platforms.
  • Design and implement standardized accounting and financial processes that can be effectively adopted across multiple entities and operating environments.
  • Act as a strategic finance partner to leadership, bringing financial discipline and structure while maintaining the flexibility and agility required in a fast-growing, entrepreneurial organization.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting, finance, or financial leadership experience in a complex, growth-oriented, or multi-faceted organization.
  • Proven experience developing, strengthening, or professionalizing accounting and finance functions, including budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, internal controls, and cost management.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, general ledger accounting, month-end close processes, and financial controls.
  • Demonstrated experience managing audit processes and partnering directly with external auditors, accounting firms, and financial advisors.
  • Experience implementing, upgrading, or optimizing ERP and financial systems; hands-on experience with NetSuite is highly desirable.
  • Experience in a manufacturing, project-based, contract-driven, or similarly operationally complex environment is preferred.
  • Hands-on, proactive leadership approach with the ability to balance detailed execution with the development of scalable, long-term financial infrastructure.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and relationship-management skills, with the ability to establish trust and credibility with executives, operational leaders, and entrepreneurial management teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently, prioritize effectively, and make sound decisions in fast-paced environments where processes and systems are still evolving.
