Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, a premier academic medical center in Richmond, is seeking applicants for multiple open-rank faculty positions within the VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. These roles will advance research under the Cancer Prevention and Control (CPC) program, focusing on identifying multi-level drivers of cancer risk, developing interventions to reduce cancer side effect burden, and improving cancer outcomes for survivors and caregivers—with a cross-cutting emphasis on cancer health equity.

About the role

The faculty member will contribute to the cancer center’s mission of reducing cancer burden by addressing the confluence of biological, social, and policy drivers on cancer disparities across the care continuum. They will collaborate with researchers in the CPC program and other programs, as well as physician-scientists, to harness VCU’s intellectual talent and scientific resources. Academic department assignment will be based on the candidate’s expertise and training.

Responsibilities

• Teaching: Provide effective instruction, training, and mentoring to medical students, graduate students, undergraduates, and post-doctoral fellows. Offer research opportunities to fellows and mentor junior faculty.
• Research:
  • Enhance VCU’s national reputation through extramurally funded research, high-quality publications, citations, and national recognition (e.g., honorific awards, committee leadership).
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals and submit grant applications focused on reducing cancer disparities across the care continuum.
  • Serve as a Principal Investigator (PI) on peer-reviewed grants, complying with institutional and sponsor terms.
  • Participate in Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center Core Grant application preparation, including updates on active research, grants, and publications.
  • Engage in collaborative research projects with other Massey Cancer Center members.
• Service: Serve on institutional committees, study sections, review groups, as a journal editor, or on editorial boards.

Requirements

• PhD, MD, or equivalent degree with training in medicine, epidemiology, public health, geo-spatial analysis, nursing, psychology, anthropology, behavioral science, behavioral economics, health services, communication, decision sciences, sociology, or related fields.
• Extensive cancer-relevant research experience.
• Nationally recognized scholarly/research portfolio with a strong track record of continuous NCI funding.
• Strong record of pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training in their field.
• Extensive peer-reviewed publication experience.
• Proven trainee and faculty mentorship skills.
• Track record working in multi-disciplinary fields.
• Experience coordinating collaborative grants and managing trans-disciplinary research.
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with diverse faculty, staff, and students, or a commitment to do so.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a matrix environment within academic medicine.
• Proven success collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams.

Position is exempt, restricted, and ORP-eligible with a 12-month appointment. Rank and tenure status are open.
