BASIC FUNCTION

Operate and maintain District swimming pools and adjacent areas in a clean and orderly condition.

Representative Duties

  • Operate and maintain District swimming pools and related equipment in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Brush and vacuum pools; clean filters, tile and pool decks; remove obstructions from filter and deck traps.
  • Conduct regular chemical tests of water, apply chemicals and maintain proper chemical balance and chemical supply inventory; maintain filters, back wash and pump house.
  • Perform semi-skilled maintenance and repairs as needed on filters, pumps, heaters and other mechanical equipment related to swimming pool operation.
  • Assist with aquatic sports activities; set-up blocks and move bulkheads as needed.
  • Perform other general maintenance as assigned; clean and sweep walkways and decks.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment involved in the maintenance and operation of District swimming pools.
  • Proper use of pool maintenance chemicals.
  • Tools and basic practices of routine building maintenance work.
  • Safety rules and their application as related to pool operation and maintenance methods, practices and equipment, including public health requirements.
  • Ability to operate and maintain pools and related equipment in accordance with prescribed standards.
  • Read and understand chemical labels and instructions.
  • Maintain schedules required for proper pool maintenance.
  • Operate maintenance equipment.
  • Perform heavy physical labor.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Education and Experience

  • Any combination equivalent to: high school diploma or equivalent and responsible experience in general maintenance including some experience in the operation and maintenance of large commercial swimming pools.

Licenses and Other Requirements

  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Certified pool operator’s certificate.

Working Conditions

  • Indoor and outdoor work environment.
  • Regular exposure to fumes, dust and odors.
  • Driving a vehicle to conduct work.

Physical Demands

  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching.
  • Carrying, pushing or pulling pool equipment and supplies.
  • Lifting and moving heavy objects.

Hazards

  • Hazardous chemicals.
  • Working around and with moving machinery.

Special Requirements / Certificates

  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's license and certified pool operator’s certificate.
  • The successful applicant will be required to pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • A pre-employment drug screening will also be administered.
  • If selected for the position, out of district applicants must be T.B. tested and fingerprinted.
  • A practical skills test may be administered at the time of interview.
