Responsibilities
- Performs limited clinical diagnostic procedures for patients with sleep related disorders. Administration of oxygen or positive airway pressure must be under the direct supervision of a registered polysomnographer.
- Interviews patient to determine sleep disorder issues and to explain testing procedures.
- Performs testing and any additional testing required for sleep disorder that is noted.
- Scores, interprets, and reports results of sleep studies.
- Educates patients about test results, sleep disorders, community support groups, and available resources.
- Prepares, calibrates, repairs, and maintains equipment required for testing.
- Determines and reports needed repairs and replacements.
- Maintains proper supplies to care for patients.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patients, patient families, laboratory staff, physicians, and other members of the hospital staff.
- Makes observations during the night, monitoring cardiac rhythm and respiration for abnormalities.
Requirements
Graduate of accredited Polysomnography program required. Graduate of JRCRTE and AMA approved School of Respiratory Therapy preferred. 3-5 years experience as a polysomnographic technician required.
Qualifications
Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
