About the role
The Post and Courier, South Carolina's premier news source, is seeking a dynamic and driven politics reporter to provide in-depth coverage of local and state politics, as well as the state's congressional delegation when warranted. This position is based in our flagship newsroom in Charleston, where you will work closely with reporters covering state government and political matters in Columbia, the state capital.
You will emphasize digital storytelling and audience engagement, with content also feeding print needs. The role requires equal adeptness at covering breaking news and developing strong enterprise stories exclusive to The Post and Courier.

Responsibilities
- Break news and analyze political currents in South Carolina to deliver compelling, well-written stories.
- Develop and pitch original story ideas, including varied storytelling formats beyond narrative or explanatory approaches.
- Work effectively in a digital-focused news operation, applying best SEO practices and promoting work on social platforms.
- Collaborate with editors and reporters across disciplines to discuss and refine story ideas.
- Manage a beat systematically, meeting deadlines while maintaining accuracy and ethical standards.
- Adapt to changing priorities and handle additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism or another field with journalism experience.
- At least 2 years of full-time newsroom experience (or significant fellowship/internship experience demonstrating high skills and potential).
- Track record of producing exemplary journalism with high-level reporting and writing skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for developing effective working relationships.
- Excellent prioritization and follow-through abilities.
