Police Sergeant

Under the limited supervision of the Police Lieutenant and/or Chief of Police, this position oversees all aspects of the patrol division, which serves as the university's police department. The primary responsibility is to supervise and lead certified police officers (full-time and part-time) as well as student Community Service Officers. This is a certified position within the Wisconsin Training & Standards (T&S) Bureau of the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Responsibilities

• Supervise and manage a 24/7/365 patrol operation using full-time and part-time officers.
• Assist with managing special events and serve as incident commander during critical situations.
• Maintain training and range certification records for all officers, ensuring compliance with DOJ/T&S annual requirements.
• Review, assess, and distribute patrol officers' reports, citations, and criminal charge documents to appropriate campus and non-campus entities.
• Provide feedback to patrol officers and manage follow-up investigations.
• Assist in updating and maintaining the police operations manual to ensure legal compliance.
• Maintain individual officer and departmental equipment inventories and replacement schedules.
• Collaborate with the Department Assistant on police records, reports, purchasing, and budget documents.
• Complete mandated crime reporting, including Uniform Crime Report and Clery Campus Safety statistics.
• Manage and coordinate the Daily Crime Log, Sexual Offender report, and Campus Timely/Emergency Notifications as required by the Clery Act.
• Work with the Police Lieutenant to create, manage, and maintain UWPD marketing and messaging through social media.
• Collaborate with campus entities (e.g., housing, student organizations) to enhance the department’s safety message.
• Exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, performance management, discipline, and scheduling of at least 2.0 FTE employees.
• Engage in problem-solving, threat assessment, conflict resolution, and emergency response.
• Maintain working knowledge of parking services, including the T2 parking database and day-to-day operations.

Requirements

• Associate degree or minimum of 60 semester credit hours from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum of five years of full-time certified police experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with sensitivity to confidential information.
• Working knowledge of desktop hardware, business software (e.g., police reporting systems, word processing, spreadsheets), and the Internet.
• Strong work habits, including attendance, punctuality, accountability, and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
• Training and experience in critical incident response, Incident Command, and Emergency Management.
• Demonstrated background in community policing principles and experience working with underrepresented populations.
• Ability to delegate, prioritize work, and manage schedules.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field.
• Experience in a higher education environment or jurisdiction closely connected to a higher education institution.
• Prior supervisory experience or leadership in training police officers.
• Collaborative experience with local/regional policing agencies and key stakeholders.
• Understanding of police database/records management systems, staffing, and social media opportunities in policing.

Special Requirements

• Certified police officer through the Wisconsin Department of Justice at the time of appointment.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Must pass a background check (criminal history, medical examination, psychological evaluation, essential job functions test, and drug screen).

Physical Demands

This role involves police patrol work, primarily conducted in squad cars or on foot. The employee must perform the physical duties of a police officer and pass an essential job functions test to verify suitability for the role.

Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work in various conditions and environments associated with police patrol work, including evening shifts and occasional adjustments to meet operational demands.

Pay

This is an hourly staff position with a minimum rate of $35.58 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Schedule

Primarily an evening Patrol Sergeant assignment, typically working 10-hour shifts. Scheduling may be adjusted to meet operational and staffing demands, including occasional shift coverage. A twelve-month probationary period is required.
