Police Sergeant (A)

About the role

The University of Miami seeks a Police Sergeant to work at the Coral Gables Campus. The Police Sergeant supervises subordinate officers and agents, develops training programs, and ensures the safety and security of all staff, students, and the general public.

Responsibilities

• Creates and implements directives and meets established goals.
• Leads, supervises, directs, and disciplines department personnel under their command.
• Reviews, prepares, and approves criminal and administrative reports.
• Maintains compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and University policies.
• Affords assistance in developing, implementing, and reviewing emergency operations and incident response plans.
• Maintains oversight of incidents, events, and emergency situations.
• Responds to serious incidents and major crimes, assuming command at the scene.
• Communicates timely and accurate information regarding critical incidents.
• Serves as a point of contact for the public.
• Provides training to department personnel and serves as a Field Training Supervisor.

Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field or equivalent experience.
• Certification and Licensing: Law Enforcement Certification.
• Experience: 5 years of service as a full-time police officer.

• Knowledge of business and management principles.
• Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
• Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.
• Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and/or supervise the work of others.
• Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

Skills

• Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and University policies.
• Ability to communicate effectively and respond to inquiries and complaints.
• Ability to establish and continuously evaluate internal controls.
• Ability to provide training and serve as a Field Training Supervisor.

Department Addendum

In addition to the general Police Sergeant job description, the assigned Support Services Sergeant assumes additional responsibilities beyond those outlined in the general Police Sergeant job description. These expanded duties are offset by a reduction in routine patrol sergeant responsibilities to maintain a balanced workload.
